The Bull Terrier dog breed
The Bull Terrier dog breed (also affectionately called "Bullies") is one of the breeds that is falling out of favor due to a reputation as being one of the pit bull breeds. It was bred as a pit fighting dog and was quite popular for this use. They were originally bred as companion dogs and they are nice dog to have.
Many areas have banned this breed or placed restrictions on their ownership. My personal belief (not having owned one), is that the problem starts with irresponsible owners and backyard breeders. Dogs that are not well trained and socialized can be a problem. And backyard breeders give little to no thought to important ethical considerations (such as not breeding aggressive dogs and not screening potential owners of these dogs). Size and AppearanceBullies are a medium sized dog breed standing 20 – 22 inches (50 – 56 cm) and weighing up to 70 pounds. They are muscular and have a strong powerful appearance. They have a long head that features small, triangular eyes that are quite deep set. Their erect ears are close set and pointed. They come in many colors and patters and have smooth short coats that require very little grooming. Personality and TemperamentWith good training and socialization this is a great breed of dog. They are energetic and very playful. They are friendly and affectionate towards their owners, strangers and other pets. They can be difficult to train because they are quite stubborn. Aside from early training and socialization they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. A bored dog is a dog that will get into trouble. This breed will chew vigorously on anything it can get at if it is bored. They do need to be well supervised with other pets. Their breeding may lead to an instinct to fight. Bull Terriers are among the Terrier Dog Breeds and are still one of the Most Popular Dog Breeds. On average they will live 12 - 14 years
