The Rough Collie Dog Breed



The Rough Collie is the more popular of the Rough and the Smooth Collie in North America. The key difference is in their coats, the smooth’s coat lies flat where the rough’s coat is more dense and longer. Both of these dogs are in the Herding Dog Breeds group.

Size and Appearance

Remember Lassie? That’s what this breed is. They are a larger dog standing 20 to 24 inches (51-61cm) and weighing 45 to 65 pounds (20-30 kg).

They have thick, dense long coats that feel harsh to touch. The coats colors are usually sable and white, tricolor or blue merle.

Personality and Attitude

Like other herding dogs they are intelligent, active, friendly and quite easily trained. They are quite devoted and are affectionate towards their owners. They are fairly energetic and love to play.

Like their smooth counterparts they can show the negative traits of barking a lot and they may nip at heels. With good training these behaviors can be taken care of

Like other herding dogs they generally live up to 12 years.
